How Our Family Saves Money on Electricity

February 21, 2017 By Courtney

If you’ve read some of my most recent blog posts, you’ll see that my husband and I are finding more ways to save money as we wait for the birth of our fourth child.

It’s been really great to see how some small changes can have such an impact on our bank account.

Because we live in Rhode Island, and thanks to deregulation, we can now select the energy company we prefer. A freedom we haven’t had until recently!

This is great news because I’m a part-time Work-At-Home-Mom, full-time Stay-At-Home-Mom, and that means lights are always on, washing machines are going, laptops are charging and the heat is cranked up like it’s Miami.

My kids are young, but I am trying to teach them to turn out the lights when they leave the room or help me turn off the TV when we are done watching. It’s all about being mindful.

How you and your family can trim home energy costs.

A popular company that helps trim energy costs is Direct Energy. They are one of the largest energy suppliers in North America, with nearly 5 million customers!

How it works

If you’re curious about your family’s home energy usage, Direct Energy offers online tools where you can view and analyze usage, helping to use less.

One of the coolest features is Direct Energy’s usage insights tool. With this insights tool, you’re able to view and analyze your energy usage, helping you make informed decisions that can help you use less.

They also offer a Nest Learning Thermostat for residential customers at no additional cost.

Nest Thermostat learns your schedule and programs itself with features like auto-schedule, auto-away, energy history and more. If customers use Nest, they could potentially save a further 10% to 12% on their heating bills and about 15% on their cooling bills.

More ways you can save with Direct Energy

Besides saving money monthly, there’s also perks with Direct Energy. Right now, they’re the only  energy provider to be a part of Plenti.

Plenti is a rewards program that lets you earn points at one store and use them at another, all with one card, so keeping track of your rewards is simple. If you sign up with Direct Energy, you’ll earn at least 1,000 points.

Direct Energy Gives Back

Direct Energy partners with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. The company has committed $5 million dollars to Texas Children’s, a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital in Houston, TX. To learn more about their charity efforts,

Offer valid for new residential customers in the National Grid Rhode Island service area until March 6, 2017.**Savings refers to the current difference (of up to 17%) between Direct Energy’s 8-month fixed price offer of 6.79¢/kWh and National Grid Rhode Island’s current Fixed Rate for Basic Service of 8.179¢/kWh, and does not include any other component of your electricity bill such as delivery or taxes. National Grid Rhode Island’s fixed rate is effective until March 31, 2017 and may change at that time. There may be no savings following that date. Direct Energy’s rate includes energy charges only and excludes delivery/transmission charges, taxes, and all other utility-related charges.
