Homemade play dough creations for Mother’s Day

May 10, 2013 By Courtney

For the dads out there who read this blog, this craft would be great for you to do with the kids. And if the dads don’t see this, moms, this would make a great grandma gift for Mother’s Day!

And for those who don’t need any more Mother’s Day gift ideas, well, you can do this for fun!

Chloe handprint

My friend and lifestyle expert Ken Maccarone demonstrated this super easy craft to do on the morning television show I work on. I knew as soon as I saw it, I had to make it with my toddler. So, thank you Ken for a fast, rainy day project!

Salt Dough Creations

Ingredients:

  • Flour- 1 cup
  • Salt- 1 cup
  • Water- ½ cup
  • Bowls (one for mixing, another for cutting out your circle)
  • Spoon
  • Food coloring

Instructions:

  • Mix the salt and flour in a large bowl
  • Make a well in the salt/flour mixture and add the water
  • Knead until smooth and shape into a ball
  • You can let your salt dough creations air dry, but it can also be dried in the oven.
  • Bake at 200 F until dry. The amount of time depends on the size and thickness of your masterpiece.
  • Thin flat ornaments may only take 45-60 minutes, but thicker ones can take 2-3 hours or more.

My daughter chose orange for the color of her play dough.

You can really create anything you want with dough. We chose to do a hand print, but your creations can also be done using cookie cutters, and by jazzing it up with glitter.

***Ken told me that if you want to add glitter, add it to the dry mixture first, then add the water and food coloring.

Happy Mother’s Day!
