What’s in a name?

January 10, 2013 By Courtney

baby names
I am days away from having my baby and I can honestly say we have not chosen a name yet for him.

Since finding out I was pregnant, the question “Have you chosen any names?” has been asked about 100 times. While people mean well, they literally don’t believe me when I say “Oh, not really. It’ll come to me eventually.”

They’re almost shocked that it APPEARS I haven’t considered it. Well, I have.

In the age of Facebook, almost every name I like has been chosen for a baby who appears in my news feed daily, or is the name of a student of my mom or sister’s, (they’re both teachers and associate names with behavior) or it’s someone’s kid’s name at work. This is not to say I wouldn’t choose one of those names, I have just received plenty of opinions from people about what they like and don’t like.

When I had my first child, we had two names we loved that we took with us to the hospital and we decided we’d look at our baby first before we named her. We ended up combining the names and went with Chloe Reese. I loved it then and I love it now. I would name her that same name all over again if I needed to.

This time we have quite a few names, but none of them sing to me like Chloe’s name did. I’m hoping that changes once I see him, because I’m panicking just a bit that I’ll be in the hospital for few days and we’ll still be referring to him as “Baby brother.” Using that name any longer is a little too Berenstein Bears for me.

All of this name talk is, of course, peanuts to worry about in the scheme of life. But right now it’s the only thing I can focus on because thankfully, everything else is squared away! No loose ends to tie up, all I can do is sit and wait. Can’t complain there!

So, as I wrestle with the name game, I’m wondering how long it took other people to name their children.

Did you know right away when you found out what you were having? Or did you wait to see the baby like me before you chose one?

No matter what his name is, he will be loved to the moon and back and we’ll all be blessed to have him in our lives.

We knew what their names would be before we even found out. (We had a boy name and a girl name ready each time.) But I also think sometimes you just have to wait until you lay eyes on your precious bundle to decide what name fits best. Good luck! xo

We had a hard time agreeing on names. Basically we had 2 kids and 2 names we agreed on, so we are done having kids! Jackson was our #1 boy choice and Sidney would have been his name had he been a girl– therefore when we had a baby girl she got the name ๐Ÿ™‚

I so know how you feel! We had boy #1 and we had 1 boy name and 5 girl names. Then came bot # 2…. We had no idea! We could never agree on a name! Finally we negotiated: I picked the first name and my hubby picked the middle name. We never truly decided on the names until we saw the baby to make sure the name felt right.
Good luck! Naming babies can be so hard- but I know you will pick the perfect name. Can’t wait to hear what you pick! ๐Ÿ™‚

I could have written this post myself. I cannot seem to settle on a name for this little boy (I’m 37 weeks), but I could name a few more girls! I know what you mean, Liza’s name just sorta fell into place and I still love it!

I decided on Maizie’s name in middle school after seeing Uncle Buck, Teddy’s real name is Thaddeus after my husband and Stella-Blue was named by my husband (after a Grateful Dead song). I thought she was a boy and was going to be Dallas like in the Outsiders (he knew it was a girl.)

Don’t worry, it will come to you when you see him.

We have a few names in mind for our future kids! If we have a boy, Brian would like to have a “Junior,” and I love the name Brian, so that will be easy. ๐Ÿ™‚ As for a girl, we have a couple of names we both like. My brother and sister-in-law named their daughter practically as soon as they found out they were having a girl. As for their son, they decided while they were waiting to be admitted to the hospital for labor! I’m sure it will come to you as soon as you see your beautiful boy!

We knew all of our girls’ names before they were born. In fact, I’m vlogging about this exact thing early next week– how we chose our names. ๐Ÿ™‚ I know plenty of people who didn’t name their babies until after they were born, though!! I really do think a name fits a child, so sometimes when you see your baby, a name you thought about just completely works. can’t wait to see what name you come up with!!!

All our middle names are family names that started with C. We picked my first son’s name (Logan) when I was pregnant, my second son’s name (Deacon) when we were trying to get pregnant again, and my third…we wanted a Finn but it took a long time to decide a formal name…a few weeks before he was born (Finnegan) Ounce you seem him something will click and his name will suit him perfectly.

Names are not easy. G’s name just came to me one day out of no where. Then the middle name and of course we wanted her initials to spell out something and they do. G.E.M. ๐Ÿ™‚ Now with #2 we are stumped. We were so creative with G’s name I feel obligated to do it again. EEK! Good luck and I can’t wait to hear what you choose!

We came to names fairly easily. Middle names are family names, and first names just kind of came to us. We had our girl name ready for when our second turned out to need it, and after thinking about it at first, I realized that yep, it fit. So we were lucky I guess, it came to us pretty easily.

We had a billion names we liked… then I thought of Adelaide, and no other name fit! From the moment we saw her, we knew that her name was a perfect fit. For future children… here’s to hoping we are just as creative! Good luck, mama!

Choosing a name for another person must be overwhelming. My sister went into the hospital liking the name Jared, and he ended up being named Nathan! Like you said – You’ll know it once you meet the little man ๐Ÿ™‚

For my son, I knew I wanted to name him “Colin” to play off my maiden name, Collins, and thankfully my husband was on board, so that was resolved as soon as we knew it was a boy. My daughter was a different story. My husband vetoed every name I suggested. Finally, he came up with Ellie, but we thought it sounded too much like a nickname, so we decided on a more formal name, Ella, with the idea we’d call her Ellie. But when she born, she was no Ellie – she was definitely an Ella. It’s funny – it’s not a name I ever pictured naming a child, but it fits her completely. Good luck – whatever you come up with will be perfect ๐Ÿ˜‰
