Summer Travel Fun With Your Dog and Pup-Peroni

June 20, 2016 By Courtney

We are taking our first family road trip next week. Not only is it the first time all five of us will be packing in the car, but we will be taking Riley, our 8-year-old Lhasa Poo with us.

Here are six things to keep in mind when making sure your road trip plans are pet-friendly and that you are pet ready. #BeefUpYourMonday #ad

Any time we’ve gone on vacation, we leave Riley with my mom. But, this time my mom and sister are coming along, so that means, Riley tags along, too!

We are driving up north to Story Land in New Hampshire and the kids are out of their minds excited. I’m excited as well, but I know I have a lot of prep work to do before we hope in my SUV for our getaway.

I’m familiar with the drill of packing for my kids, but I also want to make sure Riley has what he needs.

Here are some things I did to make sure our quick getaway was pet-friendly and we were pet ready.

  1. Reserve a place to stay that considers pets. I used BringFido.com to find our hotel. We are staying at the Hampton Inn and Suites in North Conway. They don’t even charge a fee for pets. Yasss!
  2. Contact your vet and let them know you’re going a trip. And then make copies of their medical records, in case you need it during an emergency.
  3. Double check your dog’s ID tag. I suggest putting your mobile phone number on it, that way if your dog gets lost (let’s hope not!), someone who finds your pet will have the best number.
  4. Plan pit stops for your pet on the way to your destination. Be sure to look at a map and find some pet-friendly areas where your dog can relieve himself and get some stretching and exercise in. (Let’s face it, my kids will need this same kind of break, so finding a rest area that’s good for everyone is ideal.)
  5. Pack a bag for your dog. Some of the items you’ll pack will seem obvious. Like, a food and water bowl. But, remember to pack:
    1. Medications and medical records
    2. Favorite toys
    3. Leash
    4. Poop bags
    5. Dog bed and/or crate, if needed
    6. Snacks like dog bones and Pup-Peroni Dog Treats (You’ll want to reward your dog for their good behavior, plus give them something special because you’re on vacation.
