Lansinoh: Helping moms be successful at breastfeeding

March 4, 2013 By Courtney

The world of breastfeeding is a wonderful one, but definitely challenging. Any mom who has done it, knows it takes time and commitment, but the rewards are totally worth it.

Breastfeeding this time around has been different for me for a number of reasons. When I had my daughter two years ago I had no idea what to expect because, I had a breast reduction in 2004 and wasn’t sure how successful I’d be. I wasn’t armed with the research and knowledge about what was normal and what wasn’t, so it was a bit more stressful.

Fast forward to January 14, 2013 when my son was born and going in to the hospital, I already had more information than I could process, thanks to lactation consultants and some great websites that I scoured daily.

Besides the confidence I gained, I was also lucky enough to receive some fantastic products from Lansinoh to review. The box of goodies couldn’t have arrived at a better time in my life. Everything inside the box was new to me, but I knew Lansinoh was a trusted brand for moms.

Over the past few weeks I’ve been testing the Lansinoh Affinity Pro Double Electric Breast Pump, mOmma bottle, Thera Pearl breast therapy, Soothies Gel Pads, Breastmilk Storage Bags, Disposable Nursing Pads and Lanolin.

My Reviews:

Lansinoh Affinity Pro Double Electric Pump

Lansinoh Affinity Pro Double Electric Breast Pump

Lansinoh Affinity Pro Double Electric Breast Pump

There are so many things I love about this pump. For starters, it has a digital timer on it. No more looking for a clock!

The Affinity Pro starts its clock as soon as you turn it on. That feature is so helpful because once I start pumping, it is so hard to keep track of how long I’ve been doing it.

This pump is actually the first and only pump of its kind to give moms a choice of three customizable pumping styles in order to help moms pump more milk, which leads to maximized breastfeeding success.

I love how the whole pump is digital and with the press of a button you can customize the strength and speed of it.

The Lansinoh Affinity Pro is also a “closed system pump,” which ensures maximum hygienic milk conditions for babies by preventing milk from backing up in the tubing and preventing bacteria and mold growth in tubing and pump motor.

Another perk, is the comfort of the flanges. They are cushioned ensuring a great fit. I actually use my pump with a hands-free bra and I barely feel that the flanges are there! The pump unit itself is portable, with a battery back up system, so you could actually walk around if you needed to. Us moms can only be plugged in for so long!

If you want to leave the house with the pump, the Lansinoh Affinity Pro comes with a cute black tote in the box, making it easy to go places.

I would highly recommend this pump, I’ve been using it for more than a week and I love it. It’s also not that loud. It scared my dog at first, but he’s used to it now. 🙂

The pump is available at stores across the country including Target, Babies R Us and Walmart, and online at diapers.com and drugstore.com, and retails at only $129.99.

New moms or nursing moms, you definitely will want to check this out.

Lansinoh® mOmma® Feeding Bottles and NaturalWave™ Nipples
Lansinoh mOmma bottle
Fun fact. When I heard I was getting one of these bottles in the mail to review, I literally couldn’t wait to try it, so I went to Babies R Us and bought two. I had heard and read so many good things, I couldn’t wait any longer.

In four short weeks we had spent a fortune on bottles and nipples, and I had a feeling this bottle was going to be a winner and it was!

The 100% BPA free, Lansinoh mOmma bottle is designed with the breastfeeding baby in mind.

The NaturalWave nipple allows baby to mimic natural sucking rhythm actions. Baby C was guzzling milk with other nipples and my “liquid gold” was being wasted because it was flowing out of his mouth.

With this bottle he’s able to stop sucking and no liquid comes out. So, he’s able to work hard like he would at the breast and take a little break. That was the most impressive feature I found.

Everyone who sees this bottle giggles because it’s shaped like a breast. The bottle is rounded and the nipple tries to resemble a human one, so it is quite interesting to look at compared to other bottles on the market.

The flexible, 100% silicone nipple is wide and rounded. The nipple base encourages a wider latch-on, which in turn helps promote oral, facial and jaw development.

The science behind products like these really do amaze me.

There aren’t a lot of parts to this bottle, so the hassle-free, one piece design really me sold me too. When you’ve got a hungry baby, time is not on your side when you need to put a million pieces together.

Even though there aren’t a lot of pieces, the mOmma bottle still features their AVS™ Air Ventilation System, which reduces the intake of gas.

After I bought those initial two bottles, I bought the entire bottle kit online. We now have the 5 ounce and 8.4 ounce bottles for our little babe. I’m so glad we found a bottle that he loves!

Suggested Retail Price: 1 count- $9.99, 2 count- $18.99

More breastfeeding accessories:

Lansinoh® HPA® Lanolin
This Lanolin topical has proven useful for me these days as my son is 7 weeks now and let’s just say his latch is getting stronger. The Lanolin has helped soothe and protect me.

I’ve actually noticed that the topical can leave an oil stain on clothes so I’ve been applying the Lanolin and then placing the Lansinoh disposable nursing pads over the nipple to protect my bras etc..it’s worked out great! The nursing pads also help me overnight from having an embarrassing look on my t-shirt if you know what I mean. They’ve been really absorbent.

I like that the Lanolin does not need to be removed prior to breastfeeding as it is the world’s purest lanolin.

Suggested Retail Price: 40 gram – $9.99

Lansinoh TheraPearl 3-in-1 Breast Therapy
This product has helped me out when I feel “a little full” and need to get the milk out quickly. You can use TheraPearl either warm or cold depending on your needs. It worked well with the pump itself, it just wrapped around the pump like a bag of peas and provided instant relief.

I love that this is reusable and non-toxic.

Suggested Retail Price: $14.39

Soothies by Lansinoh Gel Pads

I found instant, cooling relief with Soothies gel pads. The safe, reusable pads were fantastic to have when I had sore nipples. They literally soothe the skin as soon as you put it on.

Suggested Retail Price: $10.29

Lansinoh Breastmilk Storage Bags

As much as I don’t want to think about going back to work, I have to, and that means stashing my milk away so our family caregiver can continue to feed the baby breastmilk.

Last time I breastfed I never made it that far to when I was back at work, so this is new territory for me. I’ve only put away a couple of bags so far, but from what I’ve noticed the bags are durable. They have a double zipper and are leak proof.

I’ve also been laying my bags flat inside a plastic container to protect them even more. These bags are pre-sterilized medical grade storage bags and BPA free, making them a great addition to the rest of your breastfeeding accessories.

I only hope I can fill all the bags in the box. We’ll see!

Suggested Retail Price ranges from $7.00 to $20.00.

I can’t believe there are this many products to help a moms’ breastfeeding experience a little easier. Thanks so much Lansinoh for making my journey a smooth one!

Disclosure: I was provided product samples from Lansinoh for the purpose of this review. All products were tested by me, and all opinions expressed are mine and mine alone.

I can’t believe how much things have changed through the years! Breast pumps used to be like typewriters back when my son was a baby. It sounds like Baby C is well equipped thanks to Lansinoh’s innovative line. Good for you. And congratulations again on baby #2!

I remember not having a clue about BF when G was first born. I was SUPER thankful that the nurses gave me a ton of Lansinoh lanolin to go home with though. Maybe I’ll try this pump this time around. I wasn’t happy with my Medela last time.

I’m a total fan of Lansinoh products. I’m also amazed at how quickly products change and how different they are now from when I had Averi 5 1/2 years ago. There are so many innovative things now that I would have LOVED when she was a baby. Even though I BF’d all of my girls and Charlotte is only 2, I just used what I already had, so I didn’t buy new equipment or bottles for when I left her with a sitter– but this newer stuff is very cool! My pump looks ANCIENT by comparison. LOL! The ointment and nursing pads were huge necessities, though. Those I had PLENTY OF. Glad all is going well with you!!!

It is so crazy what’s available for moms! I didn’t have one of these products with Chloe, so this has been helpful. 🙂
