This is by far the hardest review I’ve ever written. I can’t decide if it’s because of the subject in nature, or the fact that the book was just not my cup of tea.
On the heels of the oh-so-popular ‘Fifty Shades of Grey,’ comes a real-life story of one woman’s journey to submission in her sexual relationships. If you’ve ever wondered what’s behind the doors of a Dominant/submissive relationship, this book might be for you. This is obviously one woman’s personal account, but it still explains a world I’m not familiar with.
If you haven’t been curious, then you won’t enjoy Diary of a Submissive. You’ll make it through the first few chapters and then move on to the next book in your reading list.
Sophie Morgan, the author of the memoir and also her pen name, is a well-educated, independent woman in her thirties. Her story starts by explaining what her childhood was like, to her “normal” college experience to her, in my opinion, not-so-newfound sexual awakening.
From the beginning of the book, Sophie drops hints that something inside of her is different sexually, although she can’t quite put her finger on it.
Her story is well told and she describes each partner she has over the years thoroughly. Even still, I couldn’t connect with her D/s relationships and I also found it hard to keep an open mind, because I thought some of the men were jerks. (And that’s putting it nicely.)
Half way through the book there were points where I literally wanted to stop reading because I couldn’t believe she would put up with the terrible treatment.
But, as I read more I came to understand that in Sophie’s D/s relationships, as the submissive, she took the pain and humiliation to be able to experience an endorphin rush she so obviously needed. However, it still made me flinch even though she enjoyed it.
Readers will most likely appreciate that throughout the book Sophie candidly and honestly explains her need for that rush and you’ll at least understand what makes her tick.
If you REALLY enjoyed ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and it left you wanting more, then perhaps you would like to step in to this interesting world. This book is a good way for you to decide if you like the fact or fiction version of the story.
