Keep calm and carry on cooking this Thanksgiving

November 20, 2012 By Courtney

Being a digital mom, I use all kinds of apps and technology to help make life a little bit easier. And who couldn’t use a little tech support on Thanksgiving?

CNET.com is always on top of their game, and they’ve released some pretty cool apps that will help you keep calm and carry on cooking this Thanksgiving.

Avoid pre-holiday panic with these smartphone apps:

If your holiday menu is stuck in a rut. The brand new magazine app, Panna, is offering recipes and cooking videos from uber-chefs like Rick Bayless and Nancy Silverton. The videos are very detailed and walk you though every aspect of the recipe. Many of the videos were shot in the chef’s own kitchen, which is a pretty cool feature. Another highlight, recipes can easily be switched from imperial to metric.

Cooking for the first time? The Chow Thanksgiving Dinner Coach free app makes sure every dish is ready to be served and piping hot come dinner time. Whatever recipe you want to make, cranberry sauce, turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes….check off the ones you’re going to make and the app collates all of the steps. It’ll tell you when to start prepping like, “Do this on Tuesday. Do this on Wednesday.” This app has some great reviews from users!

***Tip***
If you’re using your smartphone or iPad in the kitchen as a recipe guide, keep it grime-free with a protective sleeve or a plastic bag.

Time to relax. Once everyone’s belly is full, gather around your tablet and launch the Cozy Fireplace App. Some highlights: Fireplace loops seamlessly for continual playback. Relaxing sound of the crackling fire as it was recorded. Sleep timer allows the fire to stop playing at a specified time and lets you drift off to sleep with the comfort of your own cozy fire. Also, Apple TV owners can stream the Fireplace in HD using Airplay over their home wireless network.

This app sounds cool but is probably for the true digital peeps out there. I think I’ll stick to the real thing!

When do you start preparing recipes for Thanksgiving? I plan to do my baking and cooking Wednesday. Thank goodness I’m not on turkey duty, that’s all up to my mom!

These look like great apps! Luckily I have absolutely nothing to do with Thanksgiving dinner, except to bring the wine….the perks of travelling to NY on Thanksgiving morning with two little ones, lol

I love any apps that can make my life easier! I am not cooking Thanksgiving this year but I wonder if I can get that fireplace app on a cousin’s iphone and onto their TV. That would be fun – but only until game time ๐Ÿ˜‰

Good luck with the side dishes! I’m making Butternut Squash Puree, homemade cranberry sauce and apple pie. I opted to buy a cookie tray instead of tackling that!

I like the cozy fireplace app! I should have my husband put it on his iPad, then use apple TV to put it on our television (we are sort of a tech family. ha!)!
