Disclosure: I received a sample of Block Island Organics Baby Sunscreen in exchange for this post. All opinions expressed are mine and were not influenced in any way.
It’s Earth Day! A great holiday to remind us to be kind to our planet and to protect our kids from harmful chemicals or substances.
I’ve been doing a lot this year to be greener. I no longer use plastic bags for the kids snacks when we leave the house, they’re now in a reusable pouch or container. I’ve made my own natural house cleaners and we’ve even started using a milk delivery service that brings us local milk in glass bottles that are re-used over and over. While the Tetra-pak milk is a good substitute, I feel good that we’re buying from local farms and returning our milk bottles each week.
While I’m not Captain Planet just yet, it’s nice to be on our way to living greener and cleaner.
Speaking of local companies, I’ve come across a fantastic brand that makes sunscreen for babies with a zinc only formula. Finding out about this couldn’t have come at a better time, as it’s getting warm out and I need to get back in the habit of slathering sunscreen on my kids.
I remember as a child I probably only put it on once for the day. But with our generation, we know more about sun protection and what types of products are safe. So, it’s a whole ‘nother ballgame!
You can find plenty of reading material out there why mineral based sunscreens are suggested for use, but Block Island Organics explains, “mineral sunscreens mean a mineral ingredient (an ingredient that occurs naturally in nature) like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide sits on top of your skin and reflects and scatters the suns rays. The zinc and titanium provide a physical barrier between your skin and the sun. Chemical sunscreens mean a synthetic chemical ingredient or combination of synthetic chemicals work by absorbing the sun’s UV rays.”

While it’s up to each person to decide which is best for them, for me, I’d like to enjoy a life with as few synthetic ingredients as possible. If you can get closer to nature, why not choose that?
I’ve been using the Baby Block SPF 30 Sunscreen on both of my kids recently, and so far I love it.
It’s lightweight, fragrance free, safe for babies 6 months and up and good for all skin types. My son has super sensitive skin, he can break out with eczema if food touches his face, and so far he’s had no reaction.
It goes on smoothly and you don’t need a lot of it when applying. A little goes along way. The Baby Block provides hours of all natural, UVA/UVB protection. It’s also water resistant for 40 Minutes.
All of Block Island Organics sunscreens are non-comedogenic, vegan formulated, paraben free, phthalate free, nano particle free, artificial fragrance free, non-eye irritating, not tested on animals, made in the USA and highly rated by the Environmental Working Group. That website is a great resource for checking out how your other products stack up, too.
Block Island Organics offer sunscreens with SPF 15, SPF 30 and SPF 40. They also have natural sunburn relief products.
