About to have a first today….celebrating my daughter’s half birthday at preschool this morning!
It’s been hard to explain, she keeps asking “So, I’m turning 3 again?” Classic thinking from a toddler.
I’m struggling to explain she’s half-way there to being 4 years old. In any case, she’s totally jazzed she gets to eat a Hoodsie cup at 10:30 in the morning with her class.
The reason for the mid-year celebration is that my daughter is a summer baby, and her teachers don’t want to exclude those kids from having their special day during the school year. So, they gave us parents a choice if we wanted to participate in a half-birthday celebration.
Of course, I said yes! I celebrate my birthday for an entire week, so a LITTLE half birthday won’t hurt anyone.
I personally think it’s a great idea for school celebrations, but I do think it’s excessive to hold a party and invite people. I’ve heard of this being a thing where invitations are sent out and people serve half a birthday cake. It kind of makes me chuckle me a bit.
However, there are a select few who could benefit from this type of celebration. And it doesn’t have to be just kids.
- Babies– half milestones are a big deal when you’re super small. So, having a quaint celebration with your family is kind of cute.
- Kids whose birthday falls in the summer – A mid-year celebration is a great idea to make your little one feel special with their classmates.
- Anyone who has a birthday on or near a major holiday – Sometimes people who have birthdays on major holidays or close to, often get forgotten. A half birthday is an alternative way to make them feel special.
What do you think? Do you celebrate half birthdays? Would you? Or do you think it’s another ridiculous trend?

It is hard for kids who have summer birthdays–I think it’s a great idea, but I can see how they would be confused! ๐

My son’s birthday is December 22, and I am totally anti-half birthdays. To me, celebrating by having a party on the half birthday (which would be a week before 4th of July, which is a mega holiday for us Bristolians!), sends a message that his actual birthDAY isn’t special. Or that it is just too inconvenient to have a party around the holidays. I admit I go over the top with celebrating his birthday with family to make sure it doesn’t get lost in the Christmas shuffle. But I would rather put in the extra effort for his actual day, than celebrate a half birthday! ๐

I’m not so sure. I have 11 grandkids, and 3 of them have summer birthdays. I really like what a friend of mine does… an elementary school teacher who celebrates all “month” birthdays on one particular day of that month and the summer kids get June as their month. It’s fair, it isn’t a distraction from the “real” birthday and the birthDAY is the real focus of celebration. Maybe I’m old-fashioned about the half birthdays, but I kind of see it as buying gifts for all the siblings on each sibling’s birthday so as not to hurt feelings. Kids are very resilient and understand much more than we think. I think! Excellent question for debate…

When I first read the title I was like, “what?” But that’s actually a really wonderful idea for kids with summer birthdays. They get that special day in school. Cute.

I say yah! Any excuse to celebrate a birthday. We are doing a 5.5 year old bday for H this year!

For preschool I think it’s a cute idea. When I taught 1st grade we weren’t allowed to have birthday celebrations during the year. The last week of school I would have a birthday party for the class and celebrate everyone’s at the same time.
