I’ve shied away from writing during these uncertain times, mostly because I feel like my emotions are all over the place. Some days are normal, some feel extra hard and some feel exactly like the day before. I know you’ve been there, as we are all navigating uncharted territory.
What I do know, is that I’ve seen a lot of people coming together. I see it on my street where residents are helping each other. My neighbor recently picked up hand sanitizer for us because we couldn’t find any. Another day, we bought them bananas while at the store, because they had forgotten to grab them when they made their one trip for the week. It sounds so silly to think of these things as a big deal even three months ago, but gestures like this have meant something to me and it’s more than appreciated.
The other day when the temperature was in the 60s, my youngest boys and I spent a lot of time outside drawing with chalk. We decided to join others across the state and country by creating an inspirational message for our neighbors, delivery drivers and anyone who may happen to walk by.
Our chalk message was simple. We made a rainbow because rainbows come after the storm and we chose to write the word “hope” because, without hope, what do you have?
I’m not the only one leaving inspirational chalk messages on the street. Delta Dental of Rhode Island is working its way across the state spreading their own messages of love and hope throughout local communities.
